Le Domeniche con Montale: Literary Walks in Monterosso

Le Domeniche con Montale returns to Monterosso with three literary walks dedicated to poetry and the Ligurian landscape. The events take place from 18 October to 13 December 2026. Each walk explores places connected to the life and work of Eugenio Montale.

The programme combines literature, local history and nature. In addition, it offers a new way to discover Monterosso through the eyes of one of Italy’s most important twentieth-century poets.

The initiative is organised by the Eugenio Montale and Cinque Terre Literary Park. The walks are led by Carlo Torricelli and Cristina Currarini. Participation is free, but advance booking is required.

Le Domeniche con Montale: three walks through poetry and landscape

The programme includes three different itineraries. Each one explores a particular aspect of Montale’s relationship with the Cinque Terre.

In Cuttlefish Bones (Ossi di seppia), the Ligurian landscape plays a central role. The sea, rocks, plants and light become powerful poetic images. Through these elements, Montale expresses emotions and reflects on human existence.

Walking through places that inspired his poetry offers a fresh perspective on the landscape. At the same time, readings and stories help visitors connect the poems with the places around them.

Sunday, 18 October 2026, 10:30 am – Verses in the Shadow of the Giant

Theme: Young Montale and the places of his childhood.

The first walk focuses on the summers Eugenio Montale spent in Monterosso. The route explores family memories and places connected to his early life.

The event coincides with International Literary Parks Day. Therefore, it offers an opportunity to discover the roots of Montale’s writing. It also highlights the close relationship between the poet and the Cinque Terre landscape.

Sunday, 15 November 2026, 10:00 am – Inside the Landscape of Ossi di seppia

Route: Monterosso – Cappuccini – Buranco.

The second walk explores the landscape described in Ossi di seppia. Along the route, Montale’s verses meet the natural features of the area.

Plants, sounds and coastal formations become part of the experience. As a result, participants can recognise some of the images found in his poetry.

This itinerary offers a different way to explore the territory. It is not simply about walking. Instead, it encourages visitors to observe, listen and interpret the surrounding landscape.

Sunday, 13 December 2026, 10:00 am – Is Poetry Still Possible?

Route: San Francesco – Torre Aurora – Punta Corone.

The final walk begins with an important question: is poetry still possible? The theme refers to Montale’s Nobel lecture, delivered in Stockholm on 12 December 1975.

The route symbolically connects places from the poet’s youth with his later reflections on poetry. In addition, it invites participants to discuss the role of literature in everyday life and modern communication.

This final event creates space for conversation and reflection. Poetry becomes a way to question the present, as well as to rediscover the past.
