Its grapevines climb mountains that soar as high as 1,300 feet.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWine came first and the villages came next, so the history of the Cinque Terre is the history of wine,\u201d says local sommelier Yvonne Riccobaldi. Her hometown of Manarola is one of the five villages that lends this northwestern Italian region its name. The towns\u2014Manarola, Riomaggiore, Corniglia, Vernazza, and Monterosso al Mare\u2014comprise&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.parconazionale5terre.it\/Eindex.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cinque Terre National Park<\/a>, which spans nearly ten miles of rocky coastline between the seafaring cities of Genoa and La Spezia.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ResponsiveWrapper\">\n<aside class=\"InlineElement InlineElement--below-paragraph InlineElement--page-width InlineElement--desktop InlineImage\" aria-label=\"Image\" data-bumper-index=\"1\">\n<div class=\"CopyrightImage\">\n<figure class=\"Image aspect-ratio--parent InlineImage--image\">\n<div class=\"Image__Wrapper Image__Wrapper--relative\"><img class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i.natgeofe.com\/n\/2fdfa03e-7694-4363-b5c0-41134de60974\/MM9787_210919_012277.jpg?w=1280&amp;h=854\" alt=\"Corniglia, and some vineyards, seen from the coastal road that goes through Cinque Terre\" data-mptype=\"image\"><\/div><figcaption>\n<div class=\"Caption__Wrapper\">\n<div class=\"Caption\">\n<div class=\"Caption__TextWrapper\">\n<div class=\"Caption__Text\" aria-live=\"polite\"><span class=\"Truncate Truncate--collapsed\"><span class=\"RichText\">Corniglia, Italy, one of the five towns that make up the Cinque Terre region, can be seen through grapevines planted high in the mountains.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p>An extensive network of scenic former mule trails links villages with vineyards enclosed by hand-hewn stone walls built as early as the 11th century. But crumbling terraces and a dwindling population mean that this fragile ecosystem is endangered.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Local winemakers and other businesses are focusing on sustainable and heritage tourism to bolster the economy and environment of the Cinque Terre. Here\u2019s how to drink it in.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Wines that tell a story&nbsp;<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cWe have about 30 small producers in the Cinque Terre, producing white wines made from Bosco, Albarolo, and Vermintino grapes,\u201d Riccobaldi tells me as we sip and swirl at&nbsp;A Pi\u00e9 di Campu, her Manarola restaurant and tasting room. The yields are small, too: the average vineyard puts out just 5,000 bottles a year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>These whites are made to drink young. But the region\u2019s most emblematic wine is the rare and expensive&nbsp;<i>sciacchetr\u00e0<\/i>&nbsp;(shaak-eh-tra). The complex, aged dessert wine\u2014redolent of apricots, almonds, and candied orange peel\u2014is rooted in ancient times, when the Greeks colonized the Mediterranean basin. Then, locals used a native grape varietal, called Ruzzese that, after being lost for centuries, is now being revived by a local vintner. It\u2019s just a small taste of how businesses and entrepreneurs are leaning into the area\u2019s heritage.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThanks to grassroots efforts,\u201d says Riccobaldi, \u201calmost all of the Cinque Terre restaurants now support local vineyards.\u201d These include creative, contemporary spots such as&nbsp;Rio Bistrot&nbsp;in Riomaggiore and tiny, family-owned&nbsp;Cappun Magru, on Manarola\u2019s church square. Tiny&nbsp;Osteria de Mananan&nbsp;in Corniglia, where the owner\u2019s ravioli in walnut pesto\u2014paired with a glass of dry white wine from&nbsp;CheO vineyard\u2014is worth the nearly 400-stair climb from the train station to the village.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"InsertedAd adHide\" data-bumper-index=\"7\">\n<div class=\"ad-wrapper\" tabindex=\"-1\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n<div data-box-type=\"fitt-adbox-article_dynamic\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div data-box-type=\"fitt-adbox-article_dynamic\">To really earn my supper, I hike an hour up from Manarola to the tiny village of Volastra. There,&nbsp;Locanda Tiabuscion&nbsp;serves me a&nbsp;<i>tagliolini&nbsp;<\/i>pasta with anchovies, pine nuts, and capers paired with Cantina Bordone\u2019s Aur\u00e9 white wine. The footpaths provide both stellar sea views and access to the region\u2019s family-run wineries.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p>Vineyard tours or wine tasting rooms like Riccobaldi\u2019s or&nbsp;Ghem\u00e9&nbsp;in Riomaggiore also reveal local life and wine culture. Book in advance, though, because all are small and family owned. Take&nbsp;Cian du Giorgi, a restored vineyard in the medieval village of San Bernardino, where a French-Italian couple produces wines aged mainly in Ligurian amphorae.<\/p>\n<p>Although some Cinque Terre cantinas<i>,<\/i>&nbsp;like&nbsp;V\u00e9tua, in Monterosso, host tastings in the villages, others, like&nbsp;Azienda L\u00ectan, entail a trek up from the port to their vineyard. This gives visitors a feel for the hard labor required to make wine in a region where rugged terrain prevents machine harvesting and, in most places, access by road.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Challenges to the vines and the culture<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Winemakers face steep challenges in the Cinque Terre. \u201cIt takes about 2,000 hours a year to cultivate one hectare of grapes here,\u201d says Giancarlo Gariglio of nonprofit Slow Wine Italia. \u201cIn Napa Valley, it takes about 250 hours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNinety-five percent of our terraces have been abandoned over the past century,\u201d he says. This is because the Cinque Terre lost about half of its population in the last decade. In their spare time the couple work with village elders to uncover and restore portions of the stone trails once used by Nicola\u2019s ancestors. Their goal is simple, Nicola says: \u201cto encourage visitors to explore beyond the main streets and understand the impact of our handmade walls.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><b>Growing slow tourism<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>One way to achieve this goal, many believe, is to funnel more tourist revenue from the national park entrance fees back to the land via wine tourism. \u201cWhen you sell a bottle of wine, you are selling the territory behind that bottle, the culture of that territory, and the history of the landscapes,\u201d says Massimo Garavaglia, Italy\u2019s former minister of tourism. \u201cWine-related tourism has a component in environmental sustainability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, a new approach to tourism is taking root. Christine Godfrey is raising awareness of the Cinque Terre backcountry and its wine terraces by organizing an annual ultra-marathon event,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciacchetrail.com\/?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SciaccheTrail<\/a>, followed by a wine tasting.
